When is a suit an experience?
Materials make the difference. Every designer knows that. You can completely transform an object or a space by changing the materials. Brooklyn, New York artist Gene Pool (Bill Harding) knows that better than anyone. For more than a decade he has been experimenting with re-contextualizing objects by changing the materials. Gene Pool has created a series of suits, each an individual statement, usually about recycling or some aspect of the environment. He then delights the public by making "appearances" in these enchanting and thought provoking pieces.
"Living Grass Suit" is a suit ensemble complete with hat and shoes, completely covered in more than 20 pounds of living grass - a portable park if you will. "Can Man" is a suit made of 500 recycled aluminum cans. He looks like a pile of cans - until they begin to move! The empty cans make an incredibly loud raucous and never fail to get attention. "The $uit" is covered in 52 pounds of pennies - a commentary on people who try to dress as if they had money, even if they don't. Other suits are completely covered with feathers, watches and forks - but the result is always the same - delighted faces and big smiles!
