PROJECT FEATURE
Ahead of the Game: Reinventing
Professional Sports Design
When a major arena wanted to redefine the look and feel of a professional sports environment, Brisbin Brook Beynon (BBB) Architects brought decades of expertise in elite sports facilities to the project. The team faced a clear challenge: create locker rooms that perform under extreme daily use while breaking away from the expected look and feel of traditional athletic spaces. Stakeholder feedback, expedited material delivery, and Wilsonart surfaces set a new benchmark for high-performance, contemporary design.
Key Takeaways
Modern design intent
Traceless™, Wilsonart® HPL, and Wilsonart® Compact Laminate come together for a modern look defined by refined texture and sophisticated style. Traceless adds a smudge-proof, ultra-matte finish that keeps surfaces looking clean with minimal upkeep.
Built for atheletic spaces
Designed with input from coaches, athletes, and facility managers, HPL delivers reliable durability for high-traffic surfaces, while Compact Laminate provides enhanced moisture resistance and structural strength for demanding applications.
Industry-leading service and speed
Teams relied on Wilsonart’s responsive support and on-time delivery to keep the project on track — even with an accelerated timeline and complex coordination.

From the outset, the design vision centered on breaking away from the expected. Traditional locker rooms often rely on warm wood tones and familiar layouts. Here, the BBB Architects team pursued something entirely different — dark, moody, bold, and striking, with a focus on creating a true “wow” factor. That vision comes to life across two distinct locker room environments, each with its own material expression.
In the basketball locker room, the experience begins at the locker face. Nature-inspired Smoky Velvet Elm from Traceless wraps the fronts in an ultra-luxe, ultra-matte finish that absorbs light and resists fingerprints to ensure a clean look even with constant use.
Traceless is the only matte laminate surface with a catalog of woodgrain designs, making this material selection truly unique among professional sports arenas.
The interior shifts to Hidden Springs Walnut from Wilsonart HPL. This light grey woodgrain features the dimensional Timbergrain finish and introduces a beautiful contrast and depth.
Across the room, the Black Velvet design from Traceless creates a sophisticated design moment for the media wall and whiteboard area. Its anti-glare surface keeps focus on strategy and communication while maintaining a consistent, modern aesthetic throughout the entire space.

“I saw Traceless and loved it. The surface resists glare and fingerprints, which is perfect for this space. And the deep tones work together beautifully with the moody, dramatic woodgrains for a modern look.” |

The hockey locker room builds on that same moody foundation, but adapts it for even more demanding conditions. Grey Elm from Wilsonart HPL spans the lockers, TV media cabinets, and wall cladding. Its SoftGrain finish completes the low-gloss, tactile surface that feels as durable as it looks. The slightly darker tone deepens the atmosphere to reinforce a sense of focus and intensity.
For stunning design consistency, Grey Elm was also specified in Wilsonart Compact Laminate — offering the same modern look as HPL while meeting different performance requirements. Compact Laminate forms the structural foundation of the lockers with a black core for visual seamlessness. It’s impervious to water, stands up to heavy wear, and offers the ideal balance of form and function.
Above the locker bench, Black Velvet is used on storage shelves and dividers to create a visual break while ensuring high-contact areas remain clean and consistent throughout the season. And the result is immersive. These locker rooms feel less like utilitarian back-of-house spaces and more like purpose-built environments that reflect the intensity and professionalism of the athletes who use them.
“Compact Laminate is a game-changer,” says Lawrence Lippold, Architect and Senior Project Director. “In the past, locker rooms used plywood or MDF. We learned that Compact Laminate was a great alternative because hockey equipment comes with a lot of moisture — and moisture doesn’t affect this material. We designed units with slats and perforated metal mesh and managed airflow to dry equipment.”

While the visual impact is striking, the success of the project lies in how effortlessly the design and function work together. Every decision was informed by real-world use. Equipment managers influenced storage and layout. Coaches contributed to flow and visibility. Even the geometry of the space was reconsidered to support team dynamics.
From locker interiors to media walls across both spaces, every surface serves a purpose. “The basketball locker room was built for storage, basically like a wardrobe and as a way to display jerseys,” Diana explains. “Whereas the hockey locker room was built for conversations and visibility. We even considered the shape of the room, opting for something more circular to improve connections between coaches and teammates.”

It’s already a significant challenge to redefine the look and feel of a professional athletic environment. But for an extra challenge, this project was executed on a very accelerated timeline. “This process was fast with tight timelines — April concepting, then drawings and build in September,” says Ionescu. “We worked with our Wilsonart rep and pushed orders through. We don’t know how it happened, but everything was delivered on time!”
Designing multiple locker rooms within an active arena required speed, coordination, and reliability. Wilsonart’s industry-leading service kept the pace, ensuring surfaces were delivered on time and in full. This consistency played a critical role in keeping the project on track, especially in a high-stakes environment where timing is everything.

These professional league locker rooms demonstrate how high-performance environments can achieve a strong visual impact. By layering Wilsonart Woodgrains, Traceless, HPL, and Compact Laminate, they deliver depth and contrast in high-traffic spaces, pairing durability with a bold and modern aesthetic.
To realize the goals of a leading architecture firm, the Wilsonart specification, service, and manufacturing teams worked in close collaboration to ensure accurate, on-time delivery. The result is a modern sports design that redefines the category.
