LEED® v4.1

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™ (v4.1)

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™ is the world’s leading green building project and performance management system, delivering a comprehensive framework for green building design, construction, operations, and performance. LEED® v4.1 is the next-generation standard for green building design, construction, operations and performance Wilsonart products can earn credits on a LEED-certified project, typically as part of a finished article or permanently installed product, especially with High Pressure Laminates (HPL) that are certified with Recycled Content.

WILSONART CONTRIBUTION

As stated in LEED v4.1: "The required scope of this credit is permanently installed products sourced from at least three different manufacturers...". HPL is a decorative surface which is bonded to a substrate to provide structural support before being fabricated or converted into a finished article by skilled fabricators. The final product will typically include the substrate, an adhesive and other components such as edge banding, drawer slides, door handles, or door cores, composite wood face sheets, etc. HPL does not qualify for this credit in the format produced by Wilsonart or other HPL manufacturers. For manufactures of finished articles an industry average Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and or Health Product Declaration ( HPD) is available for use in preparing an EPD of finished articles.

MR CREDIT: BUILDING PRODUCT DISCLOSURE AND OPTIMIZATION – SOURCING OF RAW MATERIALS

Responsible Sourcing of Raw Materials -
Wood Products

REQUIREMENTS

Wood products. Wood products must be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or USGBC-approved equivalent. Products meeting wood products criteria are valued at 100% of their cost for the purposes of credit achievement calculation.

WILSONART CONTRIBUTION

Forest Stewardship Council Certification - Wilsonart was the first North American Laminate manufacturer to receive Forest Stewardship Council® Chain of Custody (CoC) Certification SCS-COC-002415. All standard Wilsonart® Laminates are available on request as FSC Mix Credit.

Wood Products

REQUIREMENTS

Recycled content. Products meeting recycled content criteria are valued at 100% of their cost for the purposes of credit achievement calculation.

  • Recycled content is the sum of postconsumer recycled content plus one-half the preconsumer recycled content, based on weight.
  • The recycled fraction of the assembly is then multiplied by the cost of assembly to determine the recycled content value.

WILSONART CONTRIBUTION

Recycled content varies based upon product type. All Wilsonart® Laminate and backers have been certified by SCS Global Services for recycled content.

Option 1. Material Ingredient Reporting -
Health Product Declaration

Use at least 10 different permanently installed products from at least three different manufacturers that use any of the following programs to demonstrate the chemical inventory of the product to at least 0.1% (1000 ppm).

REQUIREMENTS

Health Product Declaration. The installed product has a published and complete Health Product Declaration with full disclosure of known hazards in compliance with the Health Product Declaration open Standard.

For Manufacturers of finished articles an industry average Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and or Health Product Declaration (HPD) is available for use in preparing an EPD of finished articles. Wilsonart supports numerous green certification initiatives by working directly with our building industry customers such as office furniture, architectural doors, wall panels, countertops, cabinets, etc.

INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY (EQ)

EQ CREDIT: LOW-EMITTING MATERIALS

Adhesives and Sealants
At least 75% of all adhesives and sealants, by volume or surface area, meet the VOC emissions evaluation AND 100% meet the VOC content evaluation.
The adhesives and sealants product category includes all interior adhesives and sealants applied on site.

REQUIREMENTS

VOC content evaluation
Adhesives and sealants:

  • SCAQMD Rule 1168, October 6, 2017
  • Canadian VOC Concentration Limits for Architectural Coatings (SOR/2009-264)
  • Hong Kong Air Pollution Control (VOC) Regulation for regulated adhesives and regulated sealants (April 2012)
  • Free of solvents, as defined in TRGS 610 (January 2011)

Composite Wood
At least 75% of all composite wood, by cost or surface area, meets the Formaldehyde emissions evaluation OR salvaged and reused materials criteria.
The composite wood product category includes all particleboard, medium density fiberboard, hardwood veneer plywood, and structural composite wood not included in the flooring, ceiling, wall panels, or furniture material categories.

WILSONART CONTRIBUTION

The LEED v4.1 requirement for composite wood panels is that they meet California Air Resources Board Ultra Low Emitting (CARB ULEF) or No Added Formaldehyde (NAF) resin requirements. HPL is NOT a composite wood panel, even thoughit does contain paper which is derived from wood. Unfortunately, this is a common misunderstanding concerning HPL. Since HPL has low emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and is NOT a Composite Wood Panel, it is EXEMPT from both the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the EPA Composite Wood Rule. Most HPL product types may qualify as an individual component in a system or part of finished product or furniture; depending upon the LEED credit approach used. As a laminate Wilsonart HPL is exempt from reporting NAUF content. NAUF certification needs to be requested from the manufacturer of the finished article who will include the substrate (wood panel), adhesive, HPL decorative surface, backer, edge banding and other components into a certification for the finished product.

Wilsonart(R) TFL panels are available with a ULEF or NAUF substrate and certifications are available upon request. Please contact a Wilsonart Sales Representative, Customer Service Representative or call the Wilsonart Customer Service Hotline at 800-433-3222.

Step 5. For Projects Pursuing Surface Reflectivity

REQUIREMENTS

Select or specify high-reflective finish materials. Before construction begins, review manufacturer's cutsheets to identify reflectance typically expressed as a fraction or percentage LR (light reflectance) or LRV (light reflectance value). If the manufactures' data do not include reflectance, measure the reflectance of product samples (before construction) or the installed product (post- construction) using the methodology described in IES Lighting Handbook, or use reflectance charts such as Lighting Guide 11, Surface Reflectance and Color.

WILSONART CONTRIBUTION

Light reflectance values (LRV) are pattern dependent. Please contact a Wilsonart Sales Representative, Customer Service Representative or call the Wilsonart Customer Service Hotline at 800-433-3222.
